What is chiptuning?

More power output, more torque, less fuel consumption – all this and much more – with chip tuning.

Electronics in automotive engineering

Since the 80’s electronics have played an increasing role in automotive engineering. Initially simple functions were monitored and the electronics only rarely took on an active function in the control of the vehicles operations. Nowadays almost every function in a car is controlled or electronically monitored by software or electronically. One of the central functions influenced by electronics is the vehicle’s engine management.

Engine management

The increasing demand for more power output, less fuel consumption, lower emission and better driveability on modern engines has brought along an increased complexity of the hardware and software requirements in engine management. The engine control unit ECU is the central part in engine management, from different input values from a variety of sensors it determines appropriate values suitable for the engine’s current operating status. Engine rotation speed, air mass, intake air- / fuel temperature and of course also the accelerator position are inputted in the calculation.

More power output and torque

Most engines are mechanically constructed by the manufacturer to suit a wide power spectrum consequently with controlled alterations of the ECU software, more power output and torque can be realized from the engine without damaging the stability of components or imperilling the suitability of the vehicle for daily use.

Developing a power upgrade

When pre selecting an engine type for modification, to start with the separate criteria of the vehicle are examined. Since, in detail, every vehicle presents slight differences, the particular vehicle data is recorded with every development project. Afterwards a detailed new synchronization of the characteristics and data is completed on the mtm rolling roads. The serial safety mechanisms like the maximum allowed pressure boost, protection of overheating protection, knock control system etc of the engine management system are unchanged subsequently the vehicle handling is tested on the road and when necessary a further fine tuning of the data is carried out. When all the desired standards in power output, torque emission levels are achieved the upgrade get its technical approval and is introduced to the mtm sales programme. For all upgraded vehicles we strongly recommend using SuperPlus 98 octane fuel.

Ce este Cantronic?

Cantronic is a family name. The family belongs to the species electronic control units and is of use wherever there is something to be optimised in the complex underworld of the modern, electronically networked car. The head of the family is the CAN bus, or Controller Area Network, to give it its full name. A serial bus system for networking control units. This is what all Cantronics access when there is work to be done. The family members’ names are M, F or V-Cantronic.

The M-Cantronic module increases performance and torque and reduces fuel consumption with an unchanged driving style.
The V-Cantronic influences speed, deactivates electronically controlled speed limits (e.g. 250 km/h) or sets new ones, at your discretion.
The F-Cantronic acts on the chassis, lowers pneumatic springs and thus the centre of gravity, improves the road holding.

The MTM electronics laboratory has now hatched the S-Cantronic, a sound module that is predestined to ensure, with its special capabilities, that a truism from the analogue past recovers its validity over time: the sound makes the music.

The so-called engine noise, created in the cylinder heads as the unavoidable consequence of the combustion process, compressed in the exhaust system into a more or less harmonious sound, does not enjoy untrammelled freedom. The legislator restricts it and the human ear also registers any discordant notes. These interfere with the ear candy but to date have been all but unavoidable because of the mechanical and thermodynamic origin of the soundscape.

This is precisely where MTM’s S-Cantronic comes in, by controlling a loud speaker in the rear silencer, which emits clear, respectable sounds sequences from the realms of the powerful eight cylinder world. No louder than permitted by the police but impressive and free of distracting harmonic distortions with an assured upward gradient spanning the entire speed range. Currently available for all vehicles with the 3.0 BiTDI engine and a power output of 313 hp (230 kW).

Fitting and removing and activating the module is accomplished in a few short minutes, TÜV (German Technical Inspection Authority) certificate and EMC assessment (electromagnetic compatibility) are evidenced by documents (not for S-Cantronic). Plug and play as well is part and parcel of what now constitutes good form.

None of the four Cantronic modules affects the software featured as standard in the control devices. All of them can be removed easily and refitted in the next car with a comparable engine. A really well-behaved family.

As a matter of principle, no biodiesel may be used in diesel engines following a performance upgrade and in the case of spark ignition engines, the only permitted fuel is RON 98. 95 RON only in an emergency and in partial-load operation. Perceptible reduction in fuel consumption with 98 RON.

„Nardo” – a name rich with associations for a new alloy wheel from MTM. The striking spoked-wheels are offered in sizes from 17″ to 20″ diameter and are available for immediate order for Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW and McLaren. Different bolt-hole diameters and wheel offsets ensure that an optimal set of wheels is available for most model variants.

It isn’t just the mtm „Nardo’s” wheel’s attractive design that commands attention. It’s name is a declaration of intent: sporty, record contender, robust and top-notch quality. With a maximum load capacity of 705 kg, it is superlatively qualified for peak stresses such as racing and high speed record-breaking runs. The new wheel is manufactured using so-called low pressure casting technology. Compared with gravity casting, this ensures superior load capacity allied with lower weight.

And on the inner face there is room for MTM high performance sport brakes: e.g. for an 8-piston fixed-calliper brake up to 405mm diameter friction ring.

Outwardly as well, all MTM „Nardo” wheels provide a perfect fit. They are designed so as to make optimal use of the wheel arch space in the particular model in question. And, an especially customer-friendly feature, they can be used with the standard wheel bolts incl. cover.

Additional benefits of the MTM „Nardo” wheel at a glance:

  • Optional tyre pressure sensors. The functionality of the production standard tyre pressure monitoring systems is retained
  • No change to the car body required
  • Combinable with all commercially available lowering options
  • Secured using production standard bolts. Original wheel locks fit
  • Approved for all series production brake systems
  • TÜV approved, strength appraisals
  • easy to clean

A large wheel requires heavy duty tyres, good enough for top performance. Michelin is the tyre partner for the MTM „Nardo” wheel.

„Bimoto” – that’s the name of MTM’s light alloy wheels, sporty and robust, timelesse elegant and modern with nine spokes, available in four striking diameters: 18″, 19″, 20″ or 21″. They accentuate the „presence” of the Volkswagen Group’s more muscular model variants: Audi Q7 and A8, Bentley, Porsche Cayenne or VW Phaeton. Different bolt-hole diameters and wheel offsets ensure that an optimal set of wheels is available for most model variants.

It isn’t just the „bimoto” wheel’s attractive design that commands attention. For those in the know, their name is synonymous with the ultimate in quality. The “titan” polished and painted wheels are crafted to the Original Equipment Manufacturer’s high standards. They are fashioned using so-called flow forming technology. Relative to comparable cast wheels, this ensures a greater load capacity – up to 900 kilos – while weighing less.

And on the inner face there is room for MTM high performance sport brakes: e.g. for an 8-piston fixed-calliper brake with up to 420 mm diameter friction ring.

Outwardly as well, all MTM “bimoto” wheels provide a perfect fit. They are designed so as to make optimal use of the wheel arch space in the particular model in question. And, an especially customer-friendly feature, they can be used with the standard wheel bolts incl. cover.

MTM Air suspensions – electronic lowering by MTM

For vehicles with air suspensions we developed an electronic lowering technology. Optimum comfort and optically perfect suspension lowering of the vehicle clearly belong together: the vehicle rest considerably lower when stationary giving it a more exclusive appearance, when the engine is started the chassis is lifted to the ideal drive dynamic position. With a selection switch the driver can control the degree of lowering to suit a particular driving technique.

A guideline to electronically lowered suspension setting:
Electronically lowered vehicle are in general measured, mtm however recommends when possible that the first measurement is taken after approximately 1000km with new vehicles.

Haldex-Steuergerät

MTM Drive Technology Interactive, drive dynamic regulation from MTM.
Design for vehicles from the VW Group with Haldex Controlled all-wheel-drive systems; the MTM developed system enables a permanent all-wheel-drive by allocating a 50/50 front/rear power distribution. This development is particularly beneficial to the sporty driver on snow, ice, crushed stone and wet roadways.

The fundamentally advantage of the MTM control system

With the drive dynamic regulation from MTM the vehicle tends more to over steer than to under steer, and consequently handles better in curves or driving on snow or loose underground. Secondly it improves the vehicles track constancy with load-cycle changes.
